Our appointment system is designed to provide improved quality of care.
Routine appointments are 15 minutes.
If a longer appointment is needed to discuss complex issues, this can be facilitated.
We always try to ensure that patients are seen on time but delays are often inevitable as patients may require extra time or the doctor may have to deal with an urgent problem.
We appreciate your understanding in relation to any delay.
It is important to remember that not all issues can be dealt with at each consultation and patients should prioritise the most important problem.
Separate appointments should be made for each family member.
We would appreciate if you would cancel your appointment if unable to attend.
There is always a doctor on call outside of surgery hours.
MIDOC provides emergency cover from 6 PM to 8 AM and on weekends and bank holidays.
MIDOC may be contacted at 1850 30272.
If there is an emergency situation during regular practice hours the Doctor may be contacted on our emergency number 0868316601.
If you contact MIDOC your details will be taken and a contact phone number requested.
This information will be passed on to a triage nurse who will call you back as soon as possible. Based on this assessment she will either give advice, arrange an appointment at one of the MIDOC centres or arrange a home visit.
The nearest MIDOC centres are in Athlone, Tullamore and Mullingar.
We accept prescription requests in writing only.
We do not accept verbal or phone requests to ensure maximum patient safety.
Repeat prescriptions may be issued for regular medications as arranged by your doctor.
Be aware when your medication is due to run out and give a minimum of 48 hours’ notice for collection of prescriptions.
Those on long-term medications may post or drop their long-term medication list (this can be obtained both from your GP and at reception) into a drop in box in the surgery and will be ready for collection in 48 hours.
If you do not have a long-term medication list, please use our prescription request form which can be forwarded to us by post, email or directly to the drop-in box in the surgery.
Please do not phone for repeat prescriptions.
Regular reviews are essential if you are on long-term medication. This is to ensure that the medication is working and that you are not experiencing side effects. If you have not been seen recently, your GP may request that you make a review appointment to discuss your medication.
A fee will apply for repeat prescriptions issued for private patients.
If you have blood tests taken they will be reviewed by your GP.
If there is any significant abnormality your GP will contact you by text , phone or post within 2 weeks.
If you have not heard from your GP please ring 0861612189 2 weeks after the test.
The results will only be given between 1 PM and 2 PM on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday.
This phone can be busy at times.
Please keep trying if you cannot get through at first.
It is our practice policy that a consultation should not be interrupted for a telephone call as this is very disruptive.
If you have a clinical problem we would recommend that you make an appointment to see one of the doctors rather than look for telephone advice.
If you have a clinical problem and cannot make an appointment for whatever reason one of our nurses will deal with this clinical query and get the doctor’s advice if appropriate.
In view of the increasing demands in relation to telephone queries it is no longer possible for our GPs to return all requested calls.
Practice staff including secretaries and nurses will endeavour to deal with these queries as appropriate.
Unfortunately due to the increasing demands on our service is no longer possible for us to accept all new patients who wish to join the practice.
We would ask that all new applicants complete a registration form for our records.
This will include your PPS number, medical card number and details of your medical history. It will also include details of the previous GP surgery.
Once we have received the application we will inform you within a short period of time if you have been accepted into the practice. Once accepted all applicants will need to sign a transfer of medical records so that your complete medical history can be forwarded from your previous GP.
If you have a medical card elsewhere it will be necessary to sign a change of doctor form.
If you require a form or letter to be completed by your GP please make a request and allow a minimum of 48 hours for it to be completed.
We charge a fee for the provision of letters.
our email facility can be used for requesting prescriptions. We do not recommend email communication for any other medical problems for legal reasons. If you have an urgent medical problem please contact the practice by telephone. Email should not be used for urgent communications.
If you require a work certificate or social welfare certificate you must first attend the GP who will decide whether to certify you.
If you need continuation of a sick cert please contact reception.
There is a charge for a work certificate.
There is no charge for social welfare cert.
It is our policy that all accounts should be settled at the time of your consultation.
We have a Visa laser machine to facilitate patients.
Receipts are issued at the time of payment for each visit. Please retain receipts at this time
Special consideration will be given to anyone who is under significant financial stress.
Please discuss this with your doctor or with the practice manager.
Some consultations are not covered under the GMS scheme and those with medical cards will be asked to pay.
If you are unsure whether your consultation is covered under The GMS scheme please check with reception.
It is important to remember for patients attending the practice for the first time that a valid medical card must be presented.
If your card has expired or is invalid you will be required to pay as per normal schedule of fees.
We would like to remind you that the following services are not covered by your medical card:

ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY
GPs and their staff have the right to care for others without fear of being attacked or abused. Any behaviour verbal or physical which causes staff to feel uncomfortable, embarrassed or threatened is totally unacceptable.
The ZERO TOLERENCE policy includes aggression or threats made in person, over the telephone or in written communication. The Practice considers threatening behaviour to be:
- Attempted or actual, aggressive threatening physical actions towards any member of staff
- The use of aggressive, threatening or abuse language (including raising of the voice, swearing and cursing, shouting) which threatens or intimidates staff.
This policy applies to the premises, the car park and grounds. It also applies to any employee or partner away from the practice but only in so far as it relates to the business of the Practice.
Any instance or threat or physical abuse will be reported to the Gardaí. The offender will be removed from the premises by the Gardaí. The patient will be removed from the Practice list. The HSE will be notified so that they can inform the patient that they must register elsewhere.
It is our ethos that all patients be treated with respect and dignity.
All patients will be treated fairly and given our best possible care.
We welcome any feedback from patients, particularly constructive feedback on improvement of our services. We would request that you put any comment in writing for the attention of our practice manager Margaret O’Malley Kenny.
If you wish to make a complaint or highlight any problem that you’ve had with our service please contact our practice manager either in writing or by phone.
Our practice is a training practice under the direction of the Ballinasloe vocational training scheme.
As a result of this, we often have a fully qualified doctor with several years of training attached to our practice for a period of one year.
These registrars are enthusiastic, dedicated and idealistic and have added hugely to the quality of care in our practice.
